How to test an AA alkaline battery

These exercises use loose AA cells or disconnected, unpowered passive parts only. Do not work on household wiring, mains supplies or high-voltage equipment. Never connect current-mode probes across a battery. Stop if a battery is damaged, leaking or hot.

DC voltage: red to +, black to −. Black lead in COM; red in V/Ω. Never use A/mA sockets across a battery.
  1. Use a loose, undamaged alkaline AA, nominally 1.5 V. Do not test leaking or hot cells. Black lead in COM; red in V/Ω. Select DC V, autorange or a range above 1.5 V.
  2. Touch red to the raised + terminal and black to the flat − terminal without shorting them together. Read the voltage. A fresh cell can read above 1.5 V; a low reading suggests depletion.
  3. A voltage measured without a load cannot prove remaining capacity or performance in a device. Avoid a universal good/bad cutoff. If a device struggles, follow its battery guidance and recycle used cells properly. Never recharge ordinary alkaline cells.
